Understanding canine dominance
In this video, dog behaviour expert Dr. Roger Abrantes discusses what dominance is and why it is actually an incredibly useful behavioural trait.
Dominance is a much-misunderstood concept and, in this article, Roger gives us the technical description. Dominance cannot be attributed to an individual, only to an individual's behaviour. All animals are capable of showing dominant behaviours as well as submissive behaviours, and an individual will show both of these many times in its lifetime. Dr. Abrantes explains the difference between the two and how it relates, for example, to whether or not you allow your dog to sit on the sofa!
A very interesting article and a must-see for animal behaviourists.
