The critical periods in puppy development
In this video, dog behaviour expert Roger Abrantes explains critical periods in puppy development and talks about what can be done if training and socialisation at these vital stages are missed.
The very first stage of a puppy's life is called the 'imprinting' stage. This is followed by a 'socialisation' stage. If these stages are managed correctly, puppies have an excellent foundation to be a happy, well adjusted and well trained pet. If these stages are managed badly, puppies can display a whole range of problems. From his research, Roger Abrantes has found that although a lot can be done to make improvements for these problem puppies, the damage can never be fully repaired.
