Judging: 'Going over' a dog
"Going over" is the phrase used to describe the way a judge performs a close assessment of a dog in the show ring. The judge will use their hands and eyes to consider how closely the dog conforms to the ideal for the breed as well as how fit and healthy they seem.
David Cavill has a wealth of experience of judging a wide range of dogs both in the UK and overseas so is an excellent guide to this procedure. In this video, he demonstrates going over a Doberman to show exactly how the judge makes their assessment. He also explains what handler and judge can do to make everything run smoothly.
