Flyball: teaching the box
Following on from his videos giving an introduction to the sport of flyball
, Richie O'Neill from Hotshots Flyball Team
looks at the training of 'the box'.
In flyball, the dogs need to be able to retrieve a tennis ball from a box. There is a lot more to this than it might seem. For example, dogs have a natural right or left handed preference in the same way that people do and it needs to be established, with each dog, what their preference is so that the handler knows which way round to teach the retrieve. Office dog Sandy is on hand as a willing demo dog, and with her help, Richie demonstrates the stages of training for successful and safe box work.
