Carting with dogs
Pete and Wendy Garrard run the Midland Bernese Carters, one of a number of carting groups in the UK. Carting, as the name suggests, is an activity where a large dog pulls a small cart. In this video, Pete tells us how dogs were historically used for carting and how that has developed into the fun activity we see today. Along the way, he offers some reassurances that these dogs aren't being made to work in the way that their ancestors did but simply having fun and often helping to raise money for charity.
It is possible to compete in carting and Pete tells us a little about that, too. However, he guards against trying out carting without proper training and tells us where we can go for this.
